Dania Matiation was born in Toronto.

She studied at the University of Western Ontario and the University of Guelph, later settling on the west coast of British Columbia.

She worked for many years as a nutritionist for Vancouver Coastal Health, also speaking extensively on critical issues in her field and writing articles on food, nutrition and family dynamics.

She is the author of Food Swings, about the personal relationship each of us has with food, and Motherwords, which imparted words of wisdom to her children.

Despite her battle against cancer, Dania persevered, and with tenacity and good humour, was able to complete Walking on Heads.

She passed away in December 2011.

Her daughter Lara, a musician, has taken on the role of the book's spokesperson and will attend interviews and events on her mother's behalf.
