LETTERS FROM THE FRONT LINES
Rear Admiral Stuart Franklin Platt
With Duffrey Sigurdson
Letters from the Front Lines is a remarkable account of the lives, and the experiences, of Americans at War in Iraq and Afghanistan. War letters have long served scholars as a rich source of material when researching the history of our Nation and this collection of letters, emails and blogs, preserves for future generations the day-to-day lives and observations of a small group of remarkable men and women in uniform.
Handwritten letters which were, until the current conflict, the only source of communication home from the frontlines, are being replaced by email and in some cases, by a web log or “blog” and this book will also serve as a reminder of how important it is that we preserve these more ephemeral records of our nation’s history, as well.

FACES OF COURAGE
Young Heroes of World War II
Sally Rogow
Faces of Courage depicts the struggle for survival by brave young people who risked their lives to defy the Nazis. There is Kirsten, a young Danish girl who helped save a group of Jewish children from the clutches of the Nazis. Yojo, a Gypsy teenager, guided downed British pilots over the Pyrenees Mountains to freedom in Spain. Jacques, a blind French teenager, organized a student resistance group called Volunteers of Liberty. The Eidelweiss Pirates were German teenagers who opposed the Hitler Youth and aided homeless Jewish children and runways. And Jacob, a young Pole, concealed his Jewish identity and went to work in a German armament factory. Three of the stories relate the heroics of real people; the others are about fictional characters but are based on documented events.

BOGI BJARNASON . . . his words
Compiled by Brian Bjarnason and Kate Jarvis
Gifted newspaperman Bogi Bjarnason fought in WWI, ran several prairie newspapers, flew airplanes and wrote poetry. His short story "The Parson's Dream" was published in the company of literary work by renowned writers like Ralph Waldo Emerson and W.S. Gilbert. This gem and a wide selection of other enduring pieces, including letters from the war, editorials, essays and poems, are brought together as an eloquent reminder of the events and issues that preoccupied a generation of Western Canadians whose dreams and sacrifices helped shape the nation's future. From "shuddery" socialism to "so-called" Christianity, Bogi always got to the heart of a story and had fun along the way.
