Biographical fiction is an increasingly popular genre, yet some critics claim that it is illegitimate, even unethical, to fictionalise real historical figures. What are the challenges in writing biofiction and what can it achieve that straight biography cannot? Ann Pearson will discuss these questions in relation to her novel A Promise on the Horizon about the French novelist Stendhal.
