Handcuffed by History

Young Offenders after Juvie. 40 years in their words.

Gordon Cruse

Handcuffed by History examines the life-long impacts of youth custody through the stories of former young offenders. Spanning four decades since their early days in youth custody, these men in their own words express the struggles and successes that allowed them to create new lives. Author Gordon Cruse, a former Youth Supervisor at the Victoria Youth Custody Centre for 26 years, explains his own experience supporting young offenders and following their progress after release from custody. Over the course of three years, Cruse conducted interviews with former young offenders from Vancouver Island to the Ontario-Manitoba border. Handcuffed by History offers insight and encouragement to families and social service workers presently wrestling with Canada’s youth justice system.
