Tom Johnston was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1941 and grew up in Regina, Saskatchewan. He began racing in 1962, at the age of 20. Over the years, he has participated in well over 300 race events at tracks across North America, as a driver, car designer and manufacturer, and team owner. In 1969 he left the Prairies for the North Shore of Vancouver, where he founded Thomas E. Johnston Engineering Inc. to co-ordinate his many and varied racing activities. In 1998, Johnston was honoured by being inducted into the Canadian Motor Sport Hall of Fame.
Johnston also built a successful career at Keen Engineering Co. Ltd., one of Canadas largest mechanical-engineering consulting firms. Starting as a student draftsman in the 1960s, over the next thirty-five years he rose to become principal shareholder, president and CEO. He was awarded the Government of Canada’s Award for Business Excellence in 1990.
In 2000, Johnston suffered a serious stroke, which left him unable to swallow or walk for a long time. He has overcome the effects of the stroke and gone on to write this book. Johnston now lives in West Vancouver with his wife, Sharon.
