Jan Krijff<\/strong> was born in the Netherlands and emigrated to Canada in 1968. He has a BA in Economics from the University of Calgary, and a master\u2019s degree in history, from Leiden University in the Netherlands. Jan has previously published\u00a0100 Years Ago: Dutch Immigration to Manitoba in 1893;\u00a0Een Aangename Vriendschap\u00a0(An Amicable Friendship);\u00a0Dutch Gentlemen Adventurers in Canada\u00a0(with Herman Ganzevoort),\u00a0and\u00a0Greetings from Canada: Postcards from Dutch Immigrants to the Netherlands 1884\u20131915. The latter received an honourable mention for history in the Indie Fab awards.<\/p>\n

Karen Green<\/strong> was born in southern Alberta. She has a BA and an LL.B from the University of Alberta, having practiced law in Edmonton and, more recently, in Vancouver where she worked in human resources and labour relations for various organizations. For twelve years, she also served as a part-time chair of review panels under the B.C.\u00a0Mental Health Act.\u00a0She is the co-author of\u00a0Greetings from Canada and contributed to\u00a0Dutch Gentlemen Adventurers.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"

It is Amsterdam, October of 1891. Karel Boissevain, a son of a successful shipowner, suffers from severe asthma, and is persuaded by his doctor to leave the Netherlands for the fresh air of Canada. Accompanied by one of his sisters, Heleen, they board a luxury steam liner to Montreal before taking a train to Alberta, where Karel will begin work with a CPR survey crew during a cold winter in Crowsnest Pass. The siblings stay in touch with their family from across the Atlantic, swapping stories of family business and letters of support. Karel has also left behind his fianc\u00e9, Wil de Vos. This devastating and intensely emotional period is captured with great feeling and honesty in their letters. The future remains uncertain for all, but their connections are unbroken.<\/p>\n
